Course Description: This course is designed to teach students the two most prevalent writing forms used in college classes. The first semester will focus on argumentative essays, using the “Lost Tools of Writing” curriculum to teach outline methods, formulation of arguments, the proper flow of an academic essay, and more. The second semester will be spent on research essays through learning how to find sources, compile information, and write bibliographies.. In addition to essay writing, students will read works of American literature, working through foundational books and poems from great American authors. By the end of the year, students will have the ability to effectively communicate their ideas and the confidence to tackle college-level writing assignments. This course is a High School English credit for both Composition and American Lit.
Course Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of writing, including sentence construction and parts of speech.

Course Description: This class will utilize Circe Institute’s “The Lost Tools of Writing: Level 1” to teach students next steps in creating beautiful persuasive essays. Lost Tools of Writing teaches artful ways of constructing argumentative and persuasive essays to help students reason and write more clearly. This class is a natural next step for early highschool students who already have a basic understanding of IEW and/or essay writing. Students will receive grades and feedback on grammar, content, word choice, and mechanics. In addition to the curriculum, students will read a variety of short stories and poems to build appreciation for quality literature and to inspire their essays. This course is a High School English credit. 
Course Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of sentence construction and parts of speech.

Course Description: Latin 1 will introduce students to the language of Western civilization. An understanding of Latin is vital to mastery of English, as well as the sciences; it is the language of law, logic, politics, and theology. This course will introduce students to Latin noun and verb endings, parts of speech, and vocabulary with an emphasis on comprehension and memorization. Students will complete exercises and read real Latin passages in “Introduction to Latin” by Susan Shelmerdine to enforce learning and aid in understanding. Exercises will be graded and feedback will be given each week as students seek to understand the world by learning this crucial language. This course counts as a High School Foreign Language credit.

Course Description: Using the Institute for Excellence in Writing’s “Following Narnia Volume 1: The Lion’s Song,” students will learn multiple forms of writing. We will go through nine units, including note taking and outlines, summarizing references, and inventive writing. While learning to write, students will develop their understanding of language by reading the first three books in C. S. Lewis’ famous series, The Chronicles of Narnia. Students will grow in their ability to write, their understanding of English grammar, and their appreciation for quality literature. This class will prepare students for High School English.

Course Description: English III will use IEW’s “The Elegant Essay” in the first semester to build students’ confidence and ability in writing beautiful, quality essays before college . The second semester will use IEW’s “Windows to the World: An Introduction to Literary Analysis,” focusing on reading and responding to assigned texts, a common requirement in college classes and a necessary skill in today’s world. Throughout both semesters, students will read classic works of British Literature to gain a greater understanding of and appreciation for the nation’s enormous contribution to world literature. This class counts as a High School English credit for both Composition and British Lit.  
Course Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of persuasive writing, including thesis statements and proofs
